Associated Disorders

Disorders that commonly co-occur with DCD include:

  • Speech and language disorders.
  • Learning disorders (especially reading and writing).
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - up to 50% co-occurrence.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Mental Health Disorders.

The co-existence of co-occurring disorders can sometimes make diagnosis more difficult.

Common Difficulties Experienced

DCD leads to impaired ability to perform activities of daily living. The effects of DCD increase with co-occurring conditions. Difficulties often experienced include:

  • Reduced participation in team play and sports.
  • Poor self esteem.
  • Poor sense of self worth.
  • Emotional and behavioural problems.
  • Impaired academic achievement.
  • Poor physical fitness.
  • Reduced physical activity.
  • Obesity and health related consequences.
